Making My Own Corner of the World Better
Every now and again, I get pretty philosophical about this world that we live in. Typically when this happens, I just entertain the thoughts, and perhaps I might have a conversation with a friend or family member about it. That's it though. Rarely is there any action taken. It is not that I don't care, but I just did not know what to do really. When I was talking about hungry people not long ago, the topic of food waste management came up. I had no idea what it was, because I know that food has such a short shelf life. Well, the majority of food does, anyway.
After reading more about different ways to handle food waste, I knew that I had to finally stop talking and start doing something about it. I am a manager of a facility in the food industry, and the only recycling that we did with food was a certain clearance program that we instituted not long ago. That was taking care of some of the food waste, but not all of it. In fact, we probably still had 90 percent of it, which is what really bothered me.
It is hard to see that much food getting thrown away when there are so many people in this world going hungry. I have read about women in third world countries mixing dirt and water together, making mud cakes, just so their children can have something in their stomachs. While I could not personally feed all of them, I knew that there were hungry people that I could reach. I partnered up with a company that takes waste management very seriously, and together we are making a real change in this community. I cannot change the world, but I can make my own corner of it much better.
